Xanadu

Ohhhhh Xanadu.. Xanadu is a musical, pronounced "Zanadu" for those who were scrunching up their foreheads in concentration trying to figure out how to say that. And there was so much wrong with it, I don't even know where to begin. Honestly, this show is the reason that everyone sticks their noses up at musical theatre. I mean, I, Amanda, the avid musical theatre lover, thought it was painful and ridiculous. That should say something!

First of all, I have no idea who in the world decided that mashing together the 80's and Greek gods was a good idea, but they were completely and totally off the deep end. That was just, what? No. No.

Secondly, the cheesy puns and lines. Honestly? Honestly. I'm talking squeezy cheese, swiss cheese, american cheese, melt it down and it would be a massive glob of greasy dairy, cheese. I just observed with a look of complete disgust most of the time. I couldn't see my face, obviously, but I can only imagine what others would have seen... Who wrote the script for that show? They should be put in the stocks and forced to endure public embarrassment.

Thirdly, the plot was just awful. I mean, come on! Just when you think you have figured out what is going on, they lose you again.

Roller skates, 80's music, ribbon batons, a man in a centaur costume, a Pegasus lowered from the ceiling, disco lights, spontaneous awful dance spurts, men in gold spandex, the works. Man oh man alive.

It was an experience, that's for sure. And now, if anyone ever asks me if I have seen Xanadu, I can now proudly say "Yes I have, don't make me do it again". And that will be the end of it!

I will say though that there were two characters in this show that redeemed it slightly. They were HILARIOUS! Hilarious. My gramma says that one of them reminded her of me, and I take great pride in that, let me tell you. If I can make faces like that woman, then I am set for life man, that is the only talent that I need.

Moral of the story - do not see Xanadu, unless you are just looking for mindless and ridiculous, kind of entertaining but mostly painful, theatre.

The End.

Curtain.

  1. Haha. Apparently you and my family have a knack for seeing the same plays! Katie was at that show last night on a date and hated it too! That's too funny. I was thinking it sounded strange from her description, and now from reading yours I'm really glad I wasn't there to witness this!
